Due to the recent developments related to federal nutrition assistance programs, we have shifted our traditional newsletter content to specifically focus on the impact of the government shutdown. This announcement is sent in place of our November newsletter.

This announcement is designed to inform our community on the ongoing government shutdown and how it will impact access to nutrition programs and food assistance resources. See the statuses of various programs and alternative local and statewide resources you can access.

Nutrition Programs

After Congress failed to pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2026 by the September 30 deadline, the federal government officially shut down on October 1, 2025. The shutdown will continue until Congress passes and the President signs funding legislation.

Because of the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has not released the funds that states use to pay SNAP (food assistance) benefits. This means Colorado is unable to issue the close to $120 million of November SNAP benefits to clients until the federal government restores funding.

State and county offices remain open to help with questions, applications, or recertifications. We encourage people to continue to apply, recertify, and submit paperwork during this period.

November SNAP benefits are currently on hold and your usual November benefits will not be available on your EBT card unless federal actions are taken.

Colorado WIC is open. The state of Colorado acted quickly to ensure WIC food benefits are fully funded through at least November 30, 2025 despite the federal government shutdown.

Colorado WIC will provide any updates at www.coloradowic.gov/alerts.

Colorado WIC participants should continue using their food benefits and attending their appointments as usual.

Emergency Food Providers

The emergency food system will see a surge in demand for food as federal workers and others go without paychecks and if Coloradans experience disruptions in their food benefits. This is at a time when food banks are already stretched due to sustained high need.
